Oil Spill Mitigation Modeling

Dynamic Solutions, LLC staff developed an extensive ADH hydrodynamic model of the Louisiana coast to evaluate the potential for increased Mississippi River flow to inhibit the on-shore movement of oil from the Deepwater Horizon Spill. The modeling domain included the approximately 30% of the Louisiana coast and coastal shelf. The modeling efforts included simulation of releases from the Caernarvon and Davis Pond Diversions to determine if increased discharges through the diversions had the potential to reduce the transport of oil from the spill into fragile coastal wetlands. Model simulations were performed with an additional 150,000 cfs in the Mississippi River main channel and the passes within the Birds Foot Delta. Velocity vectors and particle tracking animations from these simulations were used to evaluate the effects on both oil spill movement and salinity impacts in the receiving waters.
